VSP seek driver involved in fiery I-64 crash in Augusta County

Virginia State Police are investigating a Feb. 26 fire on Interstate 64 in Augusta County that injured two people, a news release said.

The accident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. near mile marker 96.

Police said an oversized cargo was traveling eastbound in the right lane at about 35 mph, with the pilot vehicle parked in front and behind the cargo. According to reports, a white Subaru was blocked by a pickup truck that suddenly changed lanes from the right lane to the left lane to avoid the lead vehicle.

The driver of the Subaru lost control of his brakes and struck the rear passenger side of the oversized tractor-trailer. The vehicle then returned to the right lane and entered the median, hitting an embankment.

The Subaru burst into flames, but the driver and a teenage passenger were helped out of the vehicle by passers-by before being completely engulfed in flames. Both men were taken to UVA Health Charlottesville with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The pickup continued eastbound on Interstate 64 and did not stop, according to police. The vehicle is described as a white truck with a camper shell on the bed and orange reflective tape on top of the shell.

Anyone who witnessed the accident, has information about the white truck or has dash cam footage of the incident is asked to contact Virginia State Police Precinct 1 Dispatch at 77 or by calling (540) 444-7784.

The accident remains under investigation.
