U.S. Secret Service to visit Vermont, New Hampshire next week for fraud education

VERMONT (ABC22/FOX44) – Multiple local law enforcement agencies have announced that 11 teams from the U.S. Secret Service will be stopping businesses and providing education in our area from March 17-19.

The United States Secret Service is best known for its mission of protecting the nation’s leaders, including the President and Vice President of the United States. They also protect the families of leaders and the families of former presidents and foreign heads of state visiting the United States

But they also have a second mission, their original mandate in 1865 – to protect the U.S. financial system and stop counterfeiting and fraud.

Swanton police warn about counterfeit money in circulation

The USSS will visit Vermont, New Hampshire and southern Maine this year as part of an effort to educate people about skimming devices that can steal credit card information, including PIN numbers, when people swipe their cards at ATMs or point-of-sale terminals.

USSS recommends double-checking before swiping, or even using a credit card if possible, to avoid revealing your PIN.

Windsor Police Service warns about recent scam emails

Barre Police announced that the U.S. Marine Corps will visit several areas in central Vermont:

At this time, it is unclear whether the USSS team will visit other areas of Vermont or where they will stop in New Hampshire, but visits are expected to occur daily from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
