edit: The Sheriff of Dodge County, Wisconsin is now also claiming that Sonny Naqvi was never booked in their system, raising more questions about this strange case. It’s becoming increasingly clear that a lot of people here are lying, and it appears to be either Naqvi, her entire family and friends, all five other detainees, her attorneys and the collective collective of Cook County Commissioners, or the entirety of U.S. Customs and Border Protection and now the Wisconsin Sheriff. We will be following this story closely in hopes of providing more conclusive evidence.
For Americans who keep their heads firmly in the sand, U.S. citizenship is often seen as some kind of shield that will inevitably protect them from the same indignities that are foisted upon them as if we were simply accepting the indignities endured by others detained by federal immigration agents last year. By now, it should be clear to everyone that this is not the case—when it’s your turn, the ICE or Border Patrol agent you face won’t care whether you’re a U.S. citizen or not. Find a copy of your birth certificate or social security card; it won’t hurt America’s fascist days. Hell, your family won’t even admit that you’re in their custody when they demand to know where the fuck you are. Just look at what happened to Chicago resident and U.S. citizen Sunny Naqvi last week – she was reportedly detained at O’Hare International Airport because CBP didn’t like her travel history, held for the next two days while agents lied to her family, and likely ended up being released (in another state) because she had a local elected official as a family friend. Oh, and then U.S. Customs and Border Protection claims she was never detained.
Sundas “Sunny” Naqvi, 28, was born and raised in Evanston, a suburb north of Chicago. She reportedly worked for German software company SAP SE and worked abroad along with six legal U.S. residents: three citizens and three green card holders with Pakistani passports. Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison is a family friend of the Nakviss and ultimately helped when Nakvis was taken into custody. So the six ended up flying home to Chicago, only to find Customs and Border Protection agents waiting to detain them when they arrived Thursday morning. Morrison said the only reason they were detained was their “recent travel history”. None of the others’ names have been released.
Sunny Naqvi’s family said she was held at O’Hare Airport for the next 30 hours before the group was eventually taken to Chicago’s ICE facility in Broadview on Friday night. Just before Cook County Commissioner Morrison toured the facility that night, Naqvi and others were suddenly sent across state lines to the Dodge Detention Facility in Wisconsin, eventually being released early Saturday morning nine miles from the detention center, where they were forced to hitchhike to where they could be picked up. All told, Naqvi’s family said she was detained for less than two days and there were zero charges or formal charges against them. Federal agents said Naqvi was refuse to admit they own heror where she is. In fact, they only knew her location by tracking the location of her phone—first to an ICE facility in Chicago, then to Wisconsin. The family provided photos of it all.
“We were lied to in person,” sister Sarah Afzal told Chicago Block Club. “We saw that she was exactly at [Broadview] facility. We saw her in the middle of that facility in Wisconsin… We were in contact with her and they kept saying, ‘I don’t know what to tell you. ‘”
But wait, things get even more outrageous. In a jaw-dropping statement to Chicago Block Club on Monday, a CBP spokesperson told Chicago Block Club that the entire story involving Naqvi was “blatantly false” and that she was only detained for 90 minutes.
“Summer Sundarth ‘Sunshine’ Naqvi arrived at O’Hare on March 5, 2026 at 10:21 a.m.,” the CBP statement said. “CBP officers transferred her to secondary unit for additional inspections based on law enforcement inspections and conducted a baggage inspection. Ms. Naqvi departed CBP within 90 minutes of arrival in the United States. Ms. Naqvi was not detained and was not transferred to ICE custody.”
So Customs and Border Protection is basically claiming that all six men were lying about being detained for two days, that their families, friends and attorneys were also lying and part of a vast conspiracy, and that the Cook County commissioners were lying. return Naqvi’s family fabricated false phone data showing that Naqvi was taken to an ICE facility in Chicago and then to Wisconsin. Either all theseor CBP falsely claimed to have detained a U.S. citizen. Which of them satisfies Occam’s razor principle?
“They’ve been lying from the beginning,” Morrison said on Monday. “I don’t think they want to admit that they illegally detained an American citizen again without due process. It sounds like they’re trying to cover it up. They’re seeking no accountability. I think that’s horrific and concerning for all of us. We need transparency about what actually happened. We need to hold everyone accountable for this moment. But we need Congress to investigate and we need action and legislation to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
It’s clear that no matter what happened, Naqvi was extremely lucky to have a local elected official as a family friend exercising legitimate governmental authority, although it begs the obvious question: What if she No Do you have that friend? When federal agents detain someone and then claim they did not detain that person, what are family members supposed to do?
“Thank God [Afzal] “No one should need an elected official to speak out further when someone’s constitutional rights are blocked,” Morrison said in a statement to the media. “I’m pleased to be able to help in this moment.” “
Naqvi’s lawyer Robert Held condemned the media at a press conference with Morrison.
“This is what’s happening across the country,” Held said. “Neighbors and communities that have been traumatized and terrorized are bearing the brunt of this administration’s racist policies. This reign of terror will one day end and those responsible will be held accountable. There must be transparency and accountability.”
Local candidates running for Congress in Chicago’s 7th and 9th districts also attended the press conference, calling for immigration reform and a comprehensive review while pointing out the obvious: Only a public outcry would succeed in freeing Naqvi from the hands of federal agents who would not even acknowledge to her family that she was in their possession.
“They were brought home after their families and our community refused to budge and kept demanding answers,” said congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh. “If we don’t step up, this will become the new normal.”
