Neymar has minor left knee surgery and hopes to reach the World Cup

SAO PAULO (AP) — Neymar underwent minor surgery on his left knee, his club Santos said Monday.

The 33-year-old Neymar has previously said that he wants to deal with the pain of missing many games this year. The arthroscopy was performed by Rodrigo Lasmar, who also worked for the Brazilian team. This surgery is minimally invasive and treats problems within the joint.

The striker told a music event in Sao Paulo last weekend that he still hopes to play in the World Cup and score in the final. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, who took over in May, has yet to select Neymar.

“We will do everything possible to bring this trophy to Brazil,” Neymar said. “In July, you can remind us. Hi Ancelotti, help us!”

Neymar has struggled to recover since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament during World Cup qualifying in October 2023. In January, he returned to his boyhood club Santos and played only 19 of the 38 games in Brazil’s Serie A, which began in April. He scored eight goals. His goals in the final rounds helped Santos avoid relegation.
