New York Knicks games at Madison Square Garden have always had a special energy and atmosphere over the years, even when the Knicks were poor or mediocre for much of the 2000s and 2010s. That energy and atmosphere has grown greatly over the past few years as the Knicks are considered by many to be a contender.
It’s always an even more special moment when LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Garden to take on the Knicks. Sunday’s game between the Lakers and Knicks in midtown Manhattan will be one of the biggest games of the season, in part because it will likely be James’ last game there.

As a result, tickets to that game reportedly sold for sky-high prices — in fact, in terms of ticket prices, it was the most expensive NBA game since the late great Kobe Bryant’s final game in 2016. Of course, Kobe scored 60 points in that year’s NBA Finals.
James, 41, is entering his record-breaking 23rd NBA season and is in the final year of his contract. This could be his last season in the league, although there’s no indication he’ll retire this summer, and he probably doesn’t know what he’ll do this offseason.
After taking on the Knicks, the Lakers will end an eight-game road trip against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday before hosting the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. Thursday also happens to be the league’s trade deadline.
