For many years, NuScale was the only U.S. nuclear power company with a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) certified SMR design. However, this first-mover advantage did not lead to explosive sales. Its reactor technology is costly — as evidenced by the cancellation of the Idaho National Laboratory project in 2023 — and some question whether it is more cost-effective than other clean energy alternatives such as wind or solar.
Still, NuScale’s reactor design solves many of the pain points of conventional nuclear power. Its modules are small and prefabricated in the factory, making them easier to assemble on site and with the ability to add more modules incrementally. This makes them particularly attractive to data center developers who need around-the-clock power to power artificial intelligence (AI).

It calls SMR technology one of the “most important technologies of the next 25 years.” If NuScale captured 5% of this addressable market, its sales would be about $500 billion, roughly 15,000 times its third-quarter revenue of $8.24 million.
NuScale’s current market capitalization is $4 billion. If a $1,000 investment were to grow to $100,000, the stock’s market valuation would also need to grow to about $400 billion. Is this possible? Of course, this is mathematically possible, but the probability is extremely low. Regardless, the company will need to make multiple large-scale deployments of its technology – and I’m talking hundreds of reactors – without major cancellations and with operating costs under complete control.
In short, it needs to become one of the most important energy companies in the country. nuclear Do Now is a big opportunity. But this is an opportunity measured in decades, not years. NuScale remains a risky bet on the future of nuclear energy. The benefits can be huge, but don’t expect it to happen overnight.
