Alba Berlin has never been a European Union “A” license holder, meaning it has never been a permanent member. There are 13 teams among them, and while most have re-signed licensing deals with European leagues for the next ten years, European sources believe there is an exit clause in those agreements worth around $10 million that could allow those clubs to join Silver’s joint venture. To that end, Silver said Thursday that he has had discussions with Real Madrid’s owners, the “A” license holders, and that NBA Hall of Famer Tony Parker, the majority owner of the ASVEL club near Lyon, sits on a committee of former players to advise him on Europe. But the European leagues have also threatened legal action if the NBA and FIBA try to recruit teams with contracts.
