The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake Could Reportedly Launch Before June

Bethesda is reportedly preparing to announce a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Annihilation. The Microsoft-owned studio could even launch the rumored remake before June, or as early as later this month. Leaked court documents from 2023 shared details about several unannounced projects from Bethesda, including a remake of Annihilation. Meanwhile, the studio has been developing The Elder Scrolls VI, the next game in the series. The long-awaited sequel to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was announced in 2018 and is expected to launch in 2026 or later.

Oblivion remake rumors

Rumors about a remake of “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” date back to 2023, when a developer at Virteous Studio, known for supporting the development of many AAA games, said that the company was remaking the game in Unreal Engine 5. Virtuos has developed games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and is currently supporting the development of Metal Gear Delta: Snake Eater.

Later that year, leaked court documents from a lawsuit between Microsoft and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over Xbox parent company’s attempted acquisition of Activision Blizzard revealed that Bethesda was developing a series of unannounced games, including remasters of Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

However, as recently as January 2025, a report from MP1st shared the first details about The Elder Scrolls 4 Remastered, claiming that the project is real and is indeed a complete remaster and not a remaster. Citing information shared on its website by former Virtuos employees, the publication claims that Annihilation is being “completely remade” in Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. According to leaked information, the new version of the game will redesign the original game’s stamina, stealth, blocking, archery, hit response and HUD.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released on PC and Xbox 360 in 2006, and on PS3 a year later. As the follow-up to “The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind”, this role-playing game received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success upon its release, winning multiple Game of the Year awards. Oblivion is considered one of the best games of all time.
