The crazy scene unfolded as Tempe police released raw footage of officers catching an out-of-control Corvette speeding through city streets at 142 mph. Grainy body-camera video taken on Sept. 9 captured the pale C8 Stingray screaming on the Mill Avenue Bridge, its engine roaring over Tempe Town Lake like some would-be NASCAR driver. It turns out that speed demon Mazen Alassmari was filming his own joyride while residents called 911 to complain about the Rolling Thunder show.
The first night, police on motorcycles tried to stop him, but Homeboy just flashed by like the laws of physics didn’t apply. Run through every red light and disappear into the night. Classic.
For most people, the dream of owning a new car is evaporating as the average price is now $50,000
The next night, same idiotic show off behavior. Only this time, the patrol brought out the grabbers, the cute little gadgets the police cruiser used to tie down the car’s rear wheels and slam on the brakes in a semi-controlled manner. Alasmari had no dramatic incident, just immediate comeuppance, handcuffed as his speedy rocket was hauled to vehicle prison.
The Tempe Police Department later shared the video, which highlights the use of grapple technology, which is designed to end dangerous pursuits more safely than traditional methods like spike strips or PIT maneuvers.
This whole mess gives us an idea of what happens when fools turn public roads into their personal highways, especially in inner-city areas filled with pedestrians who don’t want to be roadkill.
