Sung-Mun Song made his MLB debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Mexico City, and the San Diego Padres added him to their roster as the 27th man. Song emerged as a backup runner but didn’t do much else. Song changed that in his first MLB start when he hit a two-run double to left-center field to give the Padres a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning against the San Francisco Giants.
Song’s double was part of the Padres’ five-run fourth inning against Giants starter Logan Webb. San Diego trailed 4-1 in the first half of the fourth quarter, but after scoring five points to take a two-point lead, they never looked back and won 10-5 on Tuesday night at Oracle Park.
Walker Buehler started on the mound for the Padres and allowed two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Casey Schmitt. San Diego responded in the top of the second inning with a solo homer to left field by Xander Bogaerts, but Buehler returned to the mound in the bottom of the second inning and quickly gave up two more runs to San Francisco, giving them a 4-1 lead. Buehler settled down after the second inning and went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, no balls, and five strikeouts.
The new-look Padres offense continued to put pressure on Giants pitching, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Jackson Merrill went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base from the leadoff position. Miguel Andujar had his third at-bat and went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, a run and an RBI. Gavin Sheets and Xander Bogaerts completed a 2-for-5 at-bat game in the fourth and sixth respectively, Sheets had a stolen base and Xander Bogaerts opened the scoring for San Diego with a solo homer in the second.
Perhaps the most notable change in the Padres lineup is Fernando Tatis Jr., who spent much of the season sliding from the No. 1 or No. 2 spot in the lineup all the way to No. 5. Tatis Jr. went 1-for-5 and scored.
San Diego looks to win the series when the two teams meet Wednesday at 12:45 p.m.
