Strong, top-ranked Huskies cruise into Big East title game with convincing win over Creighton

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Sarah Strong had 23 points, seven rebounds and six steals to lead No. 1 UConn to a 100-51 victory over Creighton in the Big East semifinals on Sunday, sending the Huskies to the conference championship game for the 22nd consecutive season.

UConn (33-0) shot 71% from three-point range in the first three quarters and has won 49 consecutive games. It was also the Huskies’ 38th consecutive conference tournament win and the first time the Huskies scored 100 points in the Big East tournament. Kelly Hecker had nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Huskies.

Kennedy Townsend scored 13 points for Creighton (16-15), which is looking to advance to the conference championship game in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Missouri Valley Conference championship game losses in 2009 and 2010.

UConn hit 11 of its first 13 shots as the Huskies led 27-4 and Clayton made just two consecutive field goals in the first half. Strong scored 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks in the first half. Arnold scored 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting in the half, and the Huskies led 57-22 at halftime.

Strong became the second NCAA Division I women’s basketball player in the past 25 seasons to have at least 500 points, 200 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 50 blocks when she blocked her first shot of the game. Archie Ford hit his 100th three-pointer of the season in the first half. She joins Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Katie Lou Samuelson as the only UConn women’s basketball players with at least 100 assists and 100 three-pointers in the same season.
