Stone boys split first two games

The Stone Memorial Panthers played their first two games in the Five Star Prep Holiday Basketball Classic this past weekend in Knoxville.

Still struggling to find the right combination of players and rotations after the first half of the season, SMHS kicked off the prestigious tournament with an 80-69 victory over Clinton. The Panthers then lost to McMinn Central 64-44 in the second round.

In their first game against Clinton, Stone Memorial came out strong in the second half to open up the game and secure the victory.

Jake Cordell and Evan Mosley helped open the game with quick goals for the Panthers. At the end of the first quarter, Stone Memorial led 19-15.

Bryson Maddox set the example for Clinton and helped CHS keep pace.

Tanner Bowman and Briggs Lowe scored in the paint, Kadin Page hit an outside jumper, and the Panthers led 36-31 at halftime.

Hunter Haney and Mosley were on fire in the third quarter, Stone expanded the advantage to 59-43, and the team was ready to enter the fourth quarter.

Cordell and Lowe kept the pressure on the Panthers in the final eight minutes. Haney and Page scored and Stone Memorial won 80-69.

The top scorers for the Panthers were Cordell and Lowe, each with 26 points. Moseley contributed 11 points and Page added 7 points. Charlie Vanwinkle had five points and Haney had four. Bowman scored a goal.

Maddox led Clinton with 28 points. Ben Tockett contributed 15 points and Tristan Lundy added 10 points.

Stoneboys lose to McMinn Central 64-44

Stone Memorial’s boys struggled offensively in their second-round matchup against McMinn Central.

Stone had one player score in double figures, but the cold shooting proved costly as SMHS fell behind and lost the game by a score of 64-44.

Eight minutes into the game, McMinn Central led 19-11. Maddox Frazier provided MCHS with a hot touch and Abe Reinhold also scored from inside.

McMinn led 37-25 at the half of the second quarter and ultimately led 53-37 after three quarters.

Page scored 10 points from Stone. Lowe scored eight points and Vanwinkle scored seven. Mosley and Haney each scored five points. Bowman scored three points and Jack Hennessey and Cordell each had two points.

Frazier led McMinn with 20 points, while Reinhold added 18 points.

Stone, who is 5-5 on the year, will take the court again on Dec. 29 when the Panthers attend the Music City Basketball Festival in Nashville. SMHS will open with Ravenwood.
