Square Enix showed off two games at Thursday’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, including a new Octopath Traveler. Octopath Traveler 0 is an HD-2D turn-based role-playing game set in the events of the first game in the series and will be released on December 4, 2025 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Square Enix also announced that it will launch single-player action RPG The Adventures of Elliot: A Thousand-Year Story next year.
Octopath Traveler0 announced
Both games are developed by Team Asano, Square Enix’s in-house studio. Octopath Traveler 0 is the third game in the turn-based RPG series, set in a stand-alone story before the events of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2. The game is set in the kingdom of Orsterra, where players embark on a path of revenge after the settlement is destroyed.
Octopath Traveler 0 will allow players to completely customize their protagonist – a first in the series. During the journey, players will rebuild their home, recruit more than 30 characters, and participate in turn-based battles. The role-playing game will feature the series’ signature HD-2D visual style, combining pixel art with 3D environments and modern effects.
Square Enix said in a blog post on its website that Octopath Traveler 0 was inspired by “story elements and gameplay ideas” from the free-to-play mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of Continent released in 2020.
Square Enix said in the post: “This new entry in the Eight Path Walker series is designed as a full-fledged console and PC role-playing game. It takes the critically acclaimed story from the mobile version but redesigns it, adding new story content and simplifying the overall story for a more engaging experience.”
“It features a new script with all-new narrative elements, including new backstories for the playable characters, and full voice acting to drive home the many twists and turns more effectively.”
The role-playing game will be available in a Standard Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, and Collector’s Edition. Physical and digital versions of the game are now available for pre-order on the PlayStation and Xbox storefronts. Digital pre-orders are available for PC and PS4, and physical pre-orders are available for Switch and Switch 2, with digital versions launching at a later date. The Collector’s Edition is now available for pre-order on the Square Enix store.

Eliot’s Adventures: A Millennium Story Announced
Team Asano’s second game, Elliot’s Adventures: A Thousand-Year Story, is a new single-player action RPG focused on real-time action combat and exploration. Players will take on the role of the protagonist and explore a newly discovered mysterious ruins with their fairy companion Faye.
Elliot has access to seven melee and ranged weapons to fight against the enemies he encounters on his journey.
The demo of Elliot’s Adventures: A Thousand Years’ Story is now available for download on Nintendo Switch 2. The game will be released in 2026 on Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store).
