Santa Monica Studio’s next God of War project has long been a closely guarded secret. The studio recently released Sons of Sparta, a 2D God of War game on PS5, but did not reveal the future of the series. However, a new leak claims that Santa Monica is developing a new series in the God of War universe. The game will reportedly feature Kratos’ wife Faye from the Norwegian branch of the series.
New series in God of War
The information originally leaked via the LinkedIn profile of a former Santa Monica employee who claimed to have worked on the narrative of “a new series in the God of War universe.” A portion of the developer’s LinkedIn profile was republished on Resetera on Sunday.
The developer, who previously worked as a senior writer at SIE, said they helped “Sony Santa Monica Studio shape the narrative vision and creative direction of the new series in the God of War universe, developing characters, storylines and original lore that expands the critically acclaimed IP.”
Most believe this is the game God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog is working on. It was initially thought that Barlog was developing a new IP in Santa Monica.
Fey returns to star
Following the leak, industry insider NateTheHate revealed key details about the Santa Monica project on Monday. According to the tipster, the game is indeed set in the God of War universe and will feature Kratos’ wife Fay from the series’ Norse saga.
Additionally, sources say the gameplay is believed to be different from the Norse God of War games and more action-focused. They also revealed the project’s release window. The new God of War series will reportedly be revealed this year and released in the first half of 2027, barring delays.
NateTheHate’s information was confirmed by Nick Baker (@Shpeshal_Nick), another insider on X, who said the leaked information matched everything he had been told. According to his source, the game will be Faye-centric and feature more action elements, with a style closer to the Devil May Cry series than the newer God of War games.
The story of God of War (2018) begins with the deaths of Faye and Kratos, and the journey of his son Atreus to scatter her ashes on the highest mountain in the kingdom. Fey makes a brief appearance in the sequel Ragnarok as part of a flashback sequence. The character is played by Debra Ann Woll, best known for her role as Karen Page in the Marvel TV series Daredevil.
Sony and Santa Monica have yet to reveal the studio’s next new God of War project. Last month, Santa Monica confirmed at State of Play that they were remaking the God of War Greek trilogy. The remake is currently in early development stages.
Santa Monica also launched Sons of Sparta, a 2D action platformer co-developed with Mega Cat Studios. Sons of Sparta is now available on PS5.
