Sony is Taking Concord Offline, Issuing Refunds After Poor Sales

Sony is helping Concord out. The online hero shooter launched on PlayStation 5 and PC last month but failed to capture player interest, with player numbers on Steam showing a dismal picture. PlayStation parent company announced that it will take Concord offline on September 6 due to poor sales and declining player numbers. Sony confirmed that all sales of the game will be stopped and players who purchased the game on PS5 or PC will receive a full refund.

Concord to go offline

Concord developer Firewalk Studios said in a PlayStation blog post on Tuesday that the game will be offline on September 6. The studio didn’t provide an update on the future of the game, but said it would “explore options.”

“Concord fans, we’ve been listening closely to your feedback since the launch of Concord on PlayStation 5 and PC and want to thank everyone who has joined Northstar on its journey. Your support and the passionate community that has grown around the game means a lot to us,” said Ryan Ellis, Game Director at Firewalk Studios.

“However, while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognized that other aspects of the game and our initial launch did not go the way we expected. Therefore, at this time we have decided to take the game offline starting September 6, 2024 and explore various options, including those that will better engage our players,” he added.

Firewalk confirmed that the game will no longer be available for sale on PS5 and PC, and that players who have already purchased the game will receive a full refund. “If you purchased a PlayStation 5 game from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct, the refund will be credited back to your original payment method,” Firewalk said.

Items purchased through Steam and Epic Games Store will be refunded in the next few days, and the store will send a confirmation message to the customer after the refund is processed. After a refund, players will no longer have access to the game.

Concord launches on PS5 and PC on August 23, and after a period of open beta, player interest in the game appears to be low. The first-person shooter’s all-time high number of concurrent players on Steam is just 697, lower than the peak number of players for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, one of the worst-reviewed games of 2023. As of this writing, there are only 45 users playing Concord on Steam.

Concord is an online hero shooter without a battle pass system that sells for $40. With several free-to-play games on the horizon, including Overwatch 2, Concord faces the difficult task of convincing players to buy the game. A report from IGN cited industry analysts as saying that Concord has sold approximately 10,000 copies on Steam and 15,000 copies on the PlayStation Store.
