Six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon receives a knighthood from his native New Zealand

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon was knighted Wednesday in the New Year honors list in his native New Zealand.

“I’ve been called a lot of things, but I never thought ‘Sir’ would be one of them,” Dixon said. “It’s kind of crazy. It’s completely unexpected…You automatically end up right back where you started, like driving a go-kart for the first time, and then all the rest of the memory happens at breakneck speed.”

Dickerson was recognized for his contributions to motorsports when he won the Indianapolis 500 in 2008. Chip Ganassi Racing driver is inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2024.

“Sir Scott is a hero to young New Zealand motorsport fans and his fundraising work for children’s charities is invaluable,” New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said.

Scott Ronald Glyndwr Dixon, currently a Knight of the Order of New Zealand, was born in Australia to parents born in New Zealand and later returned to Auckland to live.

He won karting championships in Australia and New Zealand before moving to the United States to compete in the Indy Lights and CART series before switching to IndyCar in 2003.
