Sexual assault investigation leads to weapons of mass destruction

Luzerne County (WBRE/Wyoming) — State police said an investigation into reports of sexual assault uncovered multiple weapons of mass destruction.

On December 11, the Pittston Township Police Department stated that they were investigating multiple alleged sexual assaults involving a man named Ryan McDermott.

Police said when they executed a search warrant at a residence associated with McDermott, they found multiple firearms, including shotguns, rifles, belt-loading machine guns and AR-15-style rifles.

A warrant was issued for McDermott’s arrest, and state police said he fled when they encountered his vehicle on Dec. 18 and began a pursuit with police. PSP eventually lost track of McDemrot during the chase.

On Dec. 19, a man who let McDermott stay at his residence called state police and said he found “a large number of weapons” that McDermott had left at the home.

As stated in the affidavit, when officers responded to investigate, they found multiple firearms, ammunition and multiple explosive devices, such as suspected pipe bombs and grenades. Troopers also found several pieces of handwritten paper that said “a can of ‘BBS’, for pipe bombs, to let them soak in water so they will rust to cause more explosions and possible tetanus infection,” according to court documents.

Police said they later located and detained McDermott. No details of the arrest were provided.

McDemrot was charged with unlawful possession of weapons of mass destruction and other related crimes.
