Sean McVay has never coached against the same team in the playoffs

The Los Angeles Rams have had great success under head coach Sean McVay, especially in the playoffs. In his first eight years at the helm, Los Angeles went 8-5, won two Super Bowls and won a Lombardi Trophy.

In 2025, McVay and the Rams are back in the postseason and looking to add to their postseason win list. They will face the Carolina Panthers in the wild-card round, a team McVay has never faced in his 13 postseason games.

Oddly enough, in those 13 games, McVay has never coached the same team in the playoffs (h/tu/LucarioSkywalker found this on Reddit). Here’s a look at every team McVay coached in the postseason, including the Panthers:

  • 2018: Cowboys, Saints, Patriots

  • 2021: Cardinals, Buccaneers, 49ers, Bengals

That streak could end, though, if the Rams beat the Panthers in the wild-card round. If Los Angeles advances, the Rams will face the Seahawks, Eagles or Bears in the divisional round, depending on the outcome of the other two wild-card games.

The only scenario where McVay would face a new playoff team is if the Packers beat the Eagles and the Bears beat the 49ers. The Packers, the seventh and lowest seed in the playoffs, will travel to Seattle to face the top-seeded Seahawks. Meanwhile, the Rams will travel to Chicago to face the Bears. McVay has never coached a game against the Bears in the postseason, so his winning streak will continue.

If the Rams can do that, this streak will surely end in the NFC Championship Game. McVay coached the Packers and Seahawks in the postseason during his tenure as head coach of the Rams.

For now, though, it’s an interesting little wrinkle in McVay’s coaching career.
