Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United, ending a tumultuous spell at Old Trafford after just 14 months in charge.
Amorim, a flamboyant hire after a brilliant reign at Sporting CP, struggled to implement his preferred 3-4-2-1 system and remained loyal to it despite obvious alternatives.

Despite progress this season, Amorim has shown few signs of inspiring his philosophy and United have suffered regular setbacks, including a home defeat to Wolves who at the time only had two points.
Amorim made explosive comments after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, saying he was the Red Devils’ manager, not the manager, despite United using those words in his official appointment and appearing to attack the Old Trafford hierarchy.
“I noticed that the information you receive about everything is selective,” Amorim told the media after the Leeds clash. “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the manager of Manchester United.
“That’s clear. I know my name isn’t [Thomas] Tuchel, this is not [Antonio] Conte, this is not [Jose] Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United.

“This will continue for 18 months or when the board decides to change. That’s my point. I want to end with this. I’m not resigning. I’m going to do my job until someone else comes here to replace me.”
United sit sixth in the Premier League table, three points behind Liverpool in the race for the top four, although fifth place is likely to provide the club’s momentum with coveted Champions League football.
Their main weakness is defence, conceding 30 goals in 20 games, 12 more than Manchester City and 16 more than leaders Arsenal.
