The New England Revolution defeated Montreal 3-0 on Saturday night to win their second straight home game. It was goalkeeper Matt Turner’s first game since being named to the U.S. Men’s National Team during the international break.
Turner started for the U.S. national team last Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to Belgium. Turner spoke to Boston 25 News during Thursday’s practice and said the team needs to refocus and improve. The Revs’ starting goalkeeper said his performance in MLS over the next few weeks will be important as Turner attempts to lock down a starting goalkeeper spot on the U.S. team at this summer’s World Cup.

It’s been a great start since his return to New England. Boston 25 News football analyst Julian Cardillo spoke with Turner after Saturday night’s game.
“Anytime you can keep a clean sheet it’s good, but I think the more important thing is that we win. I know it’s important to win games and it’s important to get that feeling of winning back among ourselves and the crowd,” Turner said. “When I started training on Thursday, my level was very high and my confidence was very high, just watching the last fifteen minutes of that game. The way we blocked shots and the way we cleared the ball on set pieces. Keeping clean sheets is great for me, but any time you keep a clean sheet it’s the performance of the team as a whole.”
It was the first time this season that New England was held scoreless. Turner made several big saves, including a world-class save on Montreal’s direct kick late in the game with the score 2-0.
Reporters in the locker room after the game asked Turner about the Revs’ environment that helped him perform at his best.

“Consistency of minutes and consistency of games,” Turner responded. “Just being in an environment where I feel like a leader and people hear my voice and listen. I love this place. Everybody knows that. There’s no secret about it. “Can’t be too high, can’t be too low, where after the last win we end up losing the next game. So for us, we have to keep winning and start climbing up the table. “
Turner and New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese are vying to be the starter for Team USA in June. More clean sheets in Major League Soccer (MLS) could help Turner and showcase his good form ahead of the World Cup.
The Revs started scoring early on Saturday night. Luca Langoni scores in Game 6th minute. Mamadou Fofana scored the second goal in the 77th minute and Peyton Miller added the third goal in the final seconds of the game.
The Revs are 2-0 at Gillette Stadium this season. They outscored their opponents 9-1 in these two games. The team can perform better on the road, and New England is 0-3 this year. They currently sit 9th in the Eastern Conference.
