Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says Maduro capture is ‘the same Washington playbook’ that we’re ‘sick and tired of’

WASHINGTON — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., blasted the Trump administration’s capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro on Sunday on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” saying the operation was “part of a Washington playbook that we’re tired of and it doesn’t serve the American people.”

Green believes that President Donald Trump and his administration are “committed to making America great again, and we think that’s putting America first.”

“I would like to see domestic policies become a priority to help Americans afford to live after four disastrous years of the Biden administration,” she told “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker, pointing to policies that prioritize jobs, housing and health care.

Her comments come as lawmakers, with support largely along party lines, scramble to capture Maduro and his wife and bring them to the United States. Greene has previously opposed Trump administration policies that she believes run counter to “America First” principles.

In an interview on Sunday, she said “we don’t consider Venezuela to be our neighbor.”

“Our community is within the 50 states of the United States, not in the Southern Hemisphere,” she said.

Trump was asked by a reporter on Saturday how running Venezuela fit into his “America First” agenda, after previously saying the United States would “run this country” until new leadership is handed over.

“I think it’s because we want to be surrounded by good neighbors,” Trump told reporters. “We want to imbue ourselves with stability. We want to imbue ourselves with energy. We have tremendous energy in that country. It’s very important to protect it. We need it for ourselves. We need it for the world.”

Green also spoke out against Maduro’s actions on Saturday. The congresswoman said in X’s post that Americans are “justifiably disgusted by our own government’s never-ending military aggression and support of foreign wars because we are being forced to pay the price.”

“This is what many in MAGA thought they were voting to end,” she said in the post. “Oh my gosh, we were wrong.”

Greene’s last day in Congress will be Monday. Although she had been a loyal supporter of Trump, she announced her resignation in November after a public spat with him.

In the public fight that preceded Greene’s announcement of her resignation, the congresswoman had disagreed with him on issues including international relations, Trump’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case and Obamacare subsidies.

She believed Trump wasn’t paying enough attention to domestic policy, later saying in a CBS News “60 Minutes” interview that “for an ‘America First’ president, the first priority should be domestic policy, but that’s not the case.”
