Red Bull Heavy Metal street snowboarding competition makes high-energy Pittsburgh debut despite cold

Despite frigid temperatures, the Red Bull Heavy Metal Street Snowboarding Competition makes its debut in Pittsburgh.

In the opening single-day qualifier on February 21, 35 street snowboarders competed at Red Bull Heavy Metal Boston for the chance to ride with the pros.

Channel 11 watched part of the action outside Acrisure Stadium. We received feedback from the 5,000 fans in attendance that they were not going to let the weather stop them from attending the game.

“I love that people from Pittsburgh show up, show up,” attendee Ronan Bray said. “I love the people from New Jersey and West Virginia, too. I love everyone that comes here.”

Snowboard photographer Ashley Rosemeyer serves as one of the judges for the competition.

“Because I’m from Pittsburgh, it’s really cool to come here and listen to Red Bull Heavy Metal,” Rothmeier said. “I wasn’t sure what the riders were going to throw at these temperatures, so it was cool to see everyone hyping each other up.”

Pittsburgh native and trophy curator Jack Hnath explains the significance of the award’s design.

“The Pittsburgh skyline was used for the first-place trophy, and then someone else came up with a great idea for the Clemente Bridge for the second- and third-place trophies, which was an exciting process. It was fun to work on,” Hnath said.
