Raul Asencio: “We’re behind our manager”

Real Madrid defender Raul Asensio has spoken out in support of head coach Xabi Alonso after the club lost 2-1 to Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

In a game in which Real Madrid looked more impressive than they have in recent weeks, Asensio was one of their standout performers regardless of the scoreline.

He was substituted in the second half for being more attacking, but Asensio’s defense was key in defending such a dangerous team.

When asked about Alonso at the end of the game, he said: “We support our manager 100 percent. We understand the message he sent in the dressing room.”

“This is an unusual situation and players need to change their attitude. We saw that change today.”

Asensio was also asked about an incident in which he was pulled down in the Manchester City penalty area, but no penalty was awarded.

In this regard, he said: “The Manchester City players held down Rudiger and me during the corner kick in the penalty area. If this happens to them, it will be a penalty kick.”

Asensio will be hoping to retain his starting spot for as long as possible and his performance against Manchester City will impress Alonso as they now prepare to face Alaves at the weekend.
