Publix plans to demolish, rebuild store at Tower Square in Gainesville

Those who frequent Tower Plaza’s Publix supermarket may soon have to go elsewhere to buy groceries — at least for the time being.

Gainesville-based EDA Consultants has submitted plans to Alachua County on behalf of Publix to demolish and rebuild a 55,000-square-foot grocery store at 5801 SW 75th St.

Other businesses on the square — Piesanos, The UPS Store and Garlic & Ginger, among others — would remain unchanged, according to the submitted plans.

Lakeland-based Real Sub LLC purchased the 14.5-acre property in 2022 for $26 million, records on file with the Alachua County Property Appraiser’s Office show.

The project has not yet been approved and no timetable has been given. A Publix spokesperson wrote in an email to The Sun that they have no information about the rebuild at this time.

Gainesville’s last Publix to be demolished and rebuilt was at 3315 W. University Ave. in the Westgate Mall. The store reopened in August 2022 after being closed for approximately 18 months.
