Sony is reportedly planning to reduce the PS5’s SSD storage capacity, seemingly in an effort to control production costs despite rising prices for the console in recent months. PlayStation parent company is said to be preparing to launch a new case for the digital version of the PS5 slim in Europe, with 825GB of SSD storage, down from the 1TB storage model currently available. The new PS5 slim model reportedly comes without any design changes and appears to be aimed at avoiding a third price increase for the console in the European market.
PS5 digital version storage downgrade
This information comes from reliable leaker Billbil-Kun, who has a track record of reporting accurate details about the console’s hardware. In a report published by Dealabs on Wednesday, a tipster claimed that Sony will reduce the SSD storage of the digital PS5 slim model from 1TB to 825TB. According to reports, this downgrade is currently only happening in the European market.
Sony is reportedly planning to launch a new case for the digital version of the PS5 slim in Europe. The model number of the new chassis E is CFI-2116. The storage reduction only applies to the digital version of the console; the leaker claims that the disc-based PS5 slim will retain 1TB of SSD storage capacity.
Even worse for European consumers, Sony won’t lower the price of the console despite reducing hardware performance. Although the price of the PS5 Digital Edition has increased twice in the region since its launch in 2020. According to reports, the new PS5 slim model with reduced storage space will be released on September 13, 2025.
PS5 price rises
The digital version of PS5 was launched in 2020 alongside the disc version of the console, initially priced at 399 euros in Europe, with the price later rising to 449.99 euros. In April, Sony raised the price of its consoles in select markets including the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand after the Trump administration announced tariffs on imported products. This price increase brings the price of the digital PS5 to 499.99 euros in Europe. The company cited “challenging economic conditions” as the reason behind its decision.
Sony now appears to be further cutting console production costs by downgrading hardware. It is worth noting that both the PS5 digital version and the physical version are equipped with 825GB SSD storage, which can be expanded through the M.2 SSD slot. When the PS5 is updated to an ultra-thin version in 2023, Sony will increase the storage space to 1TB. Since then, all standard PS5 models come with 1TB of built-in storage; PS5 Pro comes with 2TB of SSD storage. Now it looks like Sony is bringing back 825GB of storage for the digital version of the console. The move is reportedly limited to Europe, but the downgrade could affect other markets at some point.
In July, Sony also increased the price of the PS5 Digital Edition in India from Rs 100. 44,990 Rs 49,990. The digital version of the console was initially priced at Rs. There are 39,990 people nationwide. Last month, the company announced it would increase the price of PS5 (digital and disc-based) and PS5 Pro by $50 in the United States.
