Portugal – Clasico: Porto draws with Benfica

This Sunday evening, the 25th round of the Portuguese League was held at the Stadium of Light. Porto and Benfica drew 2-2 and shared the result.

In a fiercely competitive first half, Benfica encountered the rock-solid Diogo Costa. Porto doubled their lead just before half-time after a fine display from youngster Oskar Pietuszewski, who dribbled past Otamendi before unleashing a powerful left-footed shot (40′). After the break, Benfica turned up the pressure – and it paid off.

As the Lutz fans cheered, the Eagles evened the score in the final seconds. Bach passed the ball on the right, Ivanovic made a precise cross, and Leandro Barreiro passed Diogo Costa (88′) at the near post. The goal sparked a brief scuffle on the bench, which resulted in Jose Mourinho being sent off (89′). The final stages were chaotic, with Pepe falling to the ground after being hit by a pellet (90′).

In stoppage time, Otamendi, who came on as a substitute, was also shown a red card (90+6′), and Benfica’s final penalty request was rejected (90+8′). Jose Mourinho’s side saved a vital point against Francesco Farioli’s side in a tense final. In the standings, the Dragons have consolidated their lead in the Portuguese league, currently four points ahead of Sporting Lisbon. Benfica, meanwhile, remain unbeaten but sit in third place with 59 points, three behind the Lions.
