Poor conditions force Mt. Hood Meadows to suspend operations

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Officials said Mount Hood Meadows was closed Friday due to a lack of new snow, melt conditions and rain damaging the snowpack.

Meadows posted on Facebook that they will suspend operations on January 2 due to saturated snowpack.

“We need to allow water from the snowpack to drain as operating in these conditions will cause damage and negatively impact our ability to operate in the coming days,” the post said.

Meadows went on to say crews worked overnight to try to get things back to normal, but they needed to give the snowpack time to recover.

KOIN 6 News Senior Meteorologist Kelley Bayern said skiing conditions are not adequate right now; however, more snow is expected next week, which could lead to more ideal skiing conditions, but the next 24 to 36 hours could be tough as temperatures rise.

At this time, Mt Hood Meadows says to keep an eye on their website and social media for updates as they resume operations.
