You know Franklin the Turtle. Created by author Paulette Bourgeois and illustrated by Brenda Clark, Franklin “could count and tie his shoes,” according to the books and TV series that chronicled his adventures in Woodland Village.

But U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has just given a new mission to this kid’s character, who is really, really not like the Franklin I know.

On Sunday night, Hegseth tweeted what may have been an AI-generated cover for the non-existent children’s book Franklin targets narco-terrorists. He tagged U.S. Southern Command, which is responsible for operations in the Caribbean, Central and South America, in the post.

Cover as shown in the picture "Franklin targets narco-terrorists" Franklin showed a sea turtle dressed in military gear shooting at ships from a helicopter. Pete Hegseth tweeted the following: "your christmas wish list"

However, the image does not appear to have been generated by Hegseth himself. Another X user posted this message on Saturday in response to Hegseth’s tweet: “We are just starting to take down the narco-terrorists.”

Pete Hegseth tweeted, "We have only begun to eliminate narco-terrorists." The reply below proposes a book by Franklin entitled "Franklin targets narco-terrorists."

The post comes as the House and Senate investigate a second attack on an alleged drug-trafficking ship in the Caribbean in September. After the first attack on the ship, which left two survivors clinging to wreckage in the water, Hegseth reportedly ordered the military to “kill everyone.” Hegseth called the story “fake news.”

In response to Hegseth’s sharing of the fake Franklin cover, many people cited the “everyone is 12 now” theory popular in American politics.

Others have proposed sequels to Hegus Franklin’s post, e.g. Franklin travels to The Hague.

and Franklin goes to jail.

Also, and this is beside the point, veterans noted that the way Franklin used his weapon would have been extremely dangerous. It seems the Secretary of War should have taken note of this as well.
