Pennsylvania nursing home ranked among best in the country

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) announced that Newsweek has named a Pennsylvania nursing home one of the best in the United States.

South Mountain Recovery Center in Franklin County was just named one of America’s Best Nursing Homes in 2026 by Newsweek, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

“Providing the highest quality care to people living in our long-term care facilities is critical to DHS. Every day, our staff go above and beyond to help create a caring, safe environment for residents with complex health needs and co-occurring conditions,” said DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh. “I am extremely proud of South Mountain Recovery Center’s hard work and dedication to their residents, which has resulted in them being recognized as one of the top nursing homes in the nation.”

South Mountain Recovery Center is a 159-bed long-term care facility that serves individuals with a history of severe mental illness and other behavioral health needs who may have previously received care in a state hospital or been incarcerated.

The center also provides specialized care for co-occurring conditions such as dementia, as well as chronic physical and behavioral health needs.
