Penn State has not officially announced the hiring of new head coach Matt Campbell, but it appears a key member of the coaching staff will remain under the incoming head coach. Multiple reports Friday night stated that Terry Smith will remain with the football team under a new contract, ensuring Campbell will have one of the most respected staff members in football to help with the transition.
Smith has generated some interest in head coaching opportunities at UConn and Memphis as each school seeks to replace head coaches who have accepted offers elsewhere. Smith has served as Penn State’s interim head coach since the firing of James Franklin, who rose to prominence at Virginia Tech. Smith coached Penn State to a 3-3 record, ending the regular season with three consecutive wins and earning bowl eligibility.

Smith has received support from a growing number of current and former Penn State football players to become the program’s new head coach. While that may not be what some want, knowing Smith will still be a big part of the team could help smooth things over during a head coaching change.
Smith’s role with the team will be confirmed at a later date, but he could still serve as coach leading the Nittany Lions in Penn State’s upcoming bowl game. Penn State’s bowl games and destinations will be officially announced on Sunday.
