Toronto’s post-Marc Savard era begins tonight, and I think his firing could spark the Maple Leafs’ offense when they take on the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins at Scotiabank Arena.

With the holidays right around the corner, both clubs are heading in the wrong direction.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost three straight, trailing 14-4 in that stretch, while the Pittsburgh Penguins have lost eight of their past nine games and are allowing an average of 3.73 goals per game in December.

That’s my top betting pick tonight as I take over Toronto’s goal total, which is currently sitting at 3.5 for a good price (+115).

Toronto’s offense has struggled of late, but that’s mostly been a fadeout from the Penguins, as Pittsburgh has allowed four or more goals in six of its past seven games, and the team has a SV% of 0.840 over that span.

However, if there’s one team the Maple Leafs should feel confident playing against, it’s the Penguins. They’ve gone 2-0 against them this season and outscored them 11-5 in those games, exceeding the team’s point total in both games.

Auston Matthews has eight points in his past four games against Pittsburgh, including at least one goal in each of his past three games.

Today I’m going to continue the offensive explosion theme and have William Nylander take over 2.5 shots. He’s averaging 3.3 shots per game over the past 10 games against Pittsburgh, which is averaging more than 28 shots per game.
