An ‘overwhelmed’ Anthony Kim completed a remarkable return to golf with victory at the LIV event in Adelaide, his first victory since battling drug and alcohol addiction after a 12-year absence.

The 40-year-old, who disappeared from professional golf in 2012 after a series of injuries, said he fell victim to “liars” and “snakes” and experienced “very dark moments” during his absence from the sport.

The American revealed last year that he had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse and had considered taking his own life.

Kim originally joined LIV Golf as a wild card in 2024 and most recently became part of Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces team following the departure of fellow player Patrick Reed out of the league.

The victory in Adelaide was his first on the PGA Tour since the 2010 Houston Open.

“I always believed this day would come,” King said. “With the support of my wife, daughter and mom, I know anything is possible, but for it to actually happen is incredible.

“I’m just trying to take it all in. In my twenties I couldn’t enjoy this moment, but having my daughter and my wife here has made it the best situation I could have asked for.

“I just want to thank everyone who supported me when I wasn’t playing well and teetering on the edge of never coming back.”

“For anyone who’s struggling, you can get through anything.”

In 2008, King became the first American under the age of 25 since Tiger Woods to win two PGA Tour events in the same year.

He was the youngest member of the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team, scoring two and a half points in four games at age 23 as Europe lost to Valhalla.

In Adelaide, he started the final round five strokes behind leaders Joe Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.

However, King had nine birdies in 63 rounds at Grange Golf Club to top the list at 23 under.

Rahm finished with a 71 that included two birdies and a bogey, leaving the Spaniard three shots behind at 20 under.

DeChambeau had two birdies and four bogeys as the American shot a final-round 74 to finish at 17 under, tied with compatriot Peter Uihlein (68) and England’s Tyrell Hatton (67).

“It’s really overwhelming,” King said. “But I will never not fight for my family.

“God has given me a talent. I was able to play some great golf today and I knew it was coming.

“No one has to believe in me but me. For anyone who’s struggling, you can get through anything.”
