The Baltimore Orioles have surprised everyone by signing multiple free agents so far this offseason, the biggest of which is Pete Alonso. One final move, however, could take this offseason from wonderful to legendary.

The move is a blockbuster deal for two-time Cy Young player Tarik Skubal, according to Fanside’s Christopher Kline. Skubal’s current team, the Detroit Tigers, is on its last legs, so it probably won’t be too hard to acquire him.

“The Baltimore Orioles might be the most interesting team in a hypothetical Skubal lottery. Traditionally, the Baltimore Orioles are unlikely to be a team that can pay Skubal a free agent fee. But they are willing to pay $1.5 for Pete Alonso The Orioles are still a smaller market and therefore at a huge disadvantage, but after trying to re-sign Corbin Barnes and being linked to top free agent arms like Franber Valdez and Rangers Suarez for months, Baltimore is short on quality young pitching. Come send Detroit (maybe Sean Baz? Cade Povich?), but their arsenal of up-and-coming prospects at the bat is huge, with Kobe Mayo, Dylan Beavers, Enrique Bradfield, even Samuel Barsalo — all names that would be attractive to a Tigers team in need of power,” Klein wrote.

Last season, Skubal went 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA, 241 Ks and an .891 WHIP in 195 innings. Pair him with Trevor Rogers, who is coming off a breakout season, and the Orioles can dominate the AL East.

However, the O’s will only have him for one year under his current contract. So if they do trade him, they need to be prepared to pay for his projected eight-year, $299 million contract.

If they can, then that’s what they’re going to do. Hopefully they can do that and push themselves into a World Series favorite.
