Arizona leads USA TODAY Sports college basketball Top 25 poll rankings as Illinois surges

The first-ever USA TODAY Sports men’s college basketball poll for February is out, and the top four teams remain stable at the end of January.

Arizona retained first place with all 31 first-place votes. Michigan State remains in second place with two wins this week in the Big Ten Conference. Connecticut and Duke ranked third and fourth, respectively.

Gonzaga inherits the fifth spot, followed by rising Illinois, which jumped four spots to sixth after beating Nebraska on Sunday. Iowa State leads Big 12 contender Houston by just two percentage points in the poll, ranking seventh. Nebraska and Michigan State each dropped multiple spots but remained in the top 10.

The Big 12 strengthened over the next five years, with Kansas leapfrogging No. 12 Purdue back to No. 11. Texas Tech and BYU occupy the next two spots, with Vanderbilt currently ranked 15th among SEC teams.

Texas A&M University ranked 25th. Due to last week’s tie, two were actually undrafted, Alabama and Iowa State.
