Olympian, Dallas native Sha’Carri Richardson arrested on dangerous speeding charge in Florida

Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson of Dallas was arrested early Thursday after authorities said she was driving more than 100 mph and weaving in and out of traffic on a Central Florida highway.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, a patrol officer stopped a vehicle on State Highway 429 near Stoneybrook Parkway. Officers said the driver was traveling at 104 mph, dangerously following other vehicles and crossing lanes to overtake.

The driver, identified by the department as Richardson, was arrested and charged with “dangerous speeding,” a charge that applies to drivers traveling at 100 miles per hour or more.

The arrest marks the latest legal troubles involving the 25-year-old Olympic sprinter, one of the most high-profile figures in U.S. track and field.

Richardson was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport last summer on domestic violence charges. Port of Seattle police arrested Richardson on July 27 after surveillance video showed him getting into a verbal altercation with Olympian Christian Coleman, during which Richardson allegedly pushed Coleman and threw a pair of headphones at him, according to officials. Coleman declined to participate in the investigation, WFAA previously reported.

After her arrest, Richardson posted a series of stories on Instagram, saying she had been reflecting on her actions and trying to move forward in a positive way. She also publicly apologized to her then-boyfriend Coleman.

No further details were available about the Florida traffic stop. Richardson is being held in the Orange County Jail on $500 bail.
