Mississippi State quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ request to the NCAA for another year of eligibility so he could play for the Rebels next season has been denied, but the fight is not over, the University of Mississippi said Wednesday.
The NCAA initially denied Chambliss’ request for a sixth year of college football eligibility on Jan. 9, so an appeal to the NCAA Track and Field Eligibility Subcommittee was also denied.

Ole Miss issued a statement saying the NCAA’s decision “is untenable in light of the undisputed facts.”
Chambliss also filed a lawsuit in state court, where the case is pending.
Chambliss “will continue to pursue all available legal remedies, and we will publicly support Trinidad while holding the NCAA accountable for decisions that are inconsistent with its own rules, precedents and medical records,” the University of Mississippi statement said.
Ole Miss’s argument revolves around the fact that Chambliss, 23, has only played three years of college football because of his medical condition, despite already attending five years of college.

“Trinidad first enrolled at Ferris State University in the fall of 2021, but medical and physical impairments prevented him from fully training, conditioning and developing his athletic abilities,” the court complaint states.
Chambliss sat out his second season due to health reasons after redshirting his first season at Ferris State in 2021-22.
He played two more seasons at Division II Michigan, leading the Bulldogs to a national championship, then transferred to the University of Mississippi before the start of this season.
Chambliss completed 294 of 445 passes (66.1 percent) for 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns and three interceptions to set a school record for wins for Ole Miss (13-2), two of which came after reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time. He ran for 527 yards and eight touchdowns.
