Capitals trade John Carlson to Ducks

In perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2026 deadline so far, the Capitals dealt longtime franchise cornerstone John Carlson to Anaheim for a conditional first-round draft pick and a 2027 third-rounder.

Carlson, 36, is still a highly effective quarterback on the blue line with 10 goals and 46 points in 55 games this season, and will provide veteran leadership to one of the NHL’s youngest rosters. Meanwhile, the fifth-place Capitals signal an end of an era.
