It looks like history is about to repeat itself.

Tottenham Hotspur have suffered some painful defeats at St James’ Park in recent years and it felt as if this was the latest after Anthony Gordon put Newcastle United back in front.

“It happened again,” fans chanted after Newcastle United took a 2-1 lead in the Premier League on Tuesday. “Tottenham Hotspur – it’s happened again!”

But when Tottenham captain Christian Romero scored a dramatic overhead kick in the 95th minute, there was a completely different feeling of déjà vu throughout the game.

Just like against Liverpool in August and Arsenal in September, Newcastle delivered a silly thump in stoppage time against members of the home order.

No team in the Premier League has dropped more points from winning positions than Eddie Howe’s side this season – 11 points.

Of course, football is never that simple, but if Newcastle manage to cross the finish line after taking the lead against Tottenham, they will be much higher than 13th in the table, let alone games against Brentford, West Ham and Arsenal.

It’s worth noting that had Newcastle played these four games they would be top of the table – instead they are 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, whom they lost by three points.

“It’s definitely weird,” Howe said. “Sometimes these things go in cycles and you can completely fix them, like our away performance. That’s another thing.

“Historically we have been very good at seeing results, dealing with difficult situations, managing games. We have to try and rediscover that as soon as possible because it will cost us important points.”
