New Jersey mother arrested in deaths of 2 sons, ages 5 and 7

Two young boys were found dead in their New Jersey home, and now their mother has been arrested.

Authorities said the children’s father came home from get off work around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and found his two sons unconscious and called 911. He told the dispatcher what his wife had done to them.

When police arrived, they found the father and his wife Priyatharsini Natarajan, 35, at their Hillsborough home.

The two boys, ages 5 and 7, were found in a bedroom.

Emergency crews tried to rescue them, but it was too late. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not yet been released.

Investigators say Natarajan caused the deaths of her children earlier that day. She was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

A plea of ​​not guilty was entered on her behalf during a virtual hearing on Wednesday.

She is due back in court on January 20 for a detention hearing.

Officials said autopsies will be performed to identify the children and determine their cause of death.

Hillsborough Principal Mike Volpe said the students attended Sunnymead Elementary School.

Crisis response teams will be on site at schools whenever needed, he said.

“No words can adequately express the gravity of this tragedy and our hearts go out to these families and the entire Sunnymede community as they grieve,” Volpe said.
