New I-94 East-West project road closures to begin March 9 in Milwaukee

Drivers, be prepared: There will be two more long-term closures in early March as part of construction on the east-west Interstate 94 project.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced the following lane and ramp closures starting March 9:

  • There is a permanent lane closure on eastbound I-94 from 35th Street to 25th Street.

  • Long-term closure of the I-94 eastbound 35th Street entrance ramp. Detours include 35th Street, Wisconsin Avenue, 27th Street, Claiborne Street and 25th Street.

Both closures are expected to last until the end of 2026. Transportation officials say drivers should plan ahead and allocate extra travel time.

The upcoming closures are part of early work on the eastern leg of the project, which began on February 2. The latest round of long-term closures includes the 27th Street Bridge, which drew the ire of local city council members.

By the end of March, eastbound Interstate 94 will return to three lanes west of American Family Field, and the General Mitchell Boulevard ramp will reopen. Long-term lane closures will resume in late summer, while ramps will remain open into the fall.
