Nancy Mace denied entrance into Horry County courtroom for Scott Spivey hearing

South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace was denied entry into an Horry County courtroom Tuesday where a stand-your-ground hearing on the Scott Spivey shooting was underway.

Mays said she showed up for the hearing at 2:15 p.m. but was not allowed in because the courtroom doors were closed. The judge granted those present at the hearing a lunch break but directed that the court would resume at 2 p.m., after which the doors would be closed and no one would be allowed to enter.

Mays then reportedly began live-streaming on his cell phone that he was unable to enter the courtroom.

Mace stood in the hallway outside the courtroom, upset, adding that this was a public hearing and people should be allowed in. She was allowed into the hearing after another break at 2:30 p.m.

Stand your ground case

North Myrtle Beach businessman Weldon Boyd and his friend Kenneth “Bradley” Williams faced a judge Tuesday to decide whether to regain immunity under South Carolina’s Stand Your Ground law for their role in the fatal shooting of Spivey, 33, of Tarbo, North Carolina, nearly three years ago.

Boyd and Williams appeared in Horry County court Tuesday for a hearing related to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Scott Spivey.

Boyd and Williams are accused of chasing Scott Spivey for nine miles on the side of Camp Swamp Road in the Longs area on Sept. 9, 2023, before fatally shooting him in a hail of gunfire.

Mace, who is running for governor of South Carolina, criticized state Attorney General Alan Wilson’s handling of the Spivey investigation. Wilson is also a candidate for governor.

The two men were not criminally charged after the state Attorney General’s Office determined their actions amounted to self-defense under the state’s “stand your ground” law.

However, evidence disclosed in wrongful death lawsuits cast doubt on that conclusion.

The hearing is expected to continue on Wednesday.
