Early Sunday night, New Jersey was hit by one of the largest snowstorms in 30 years, with heavy snow and high winds that left more than 8,000 customers without power.
More than 5,000 JCP&L customers were without power in parts of Burlington and Monmouth counties, while Atlantic City Electric reported another 3,000 customers were affected by outages, primarily in Atlantic and Cape May counties.
New Jersey officials declared a state of emergency on Saturday, with the state expected to see 8 to 20 inches of snow and blizzard conditions by the end of Monday.
“I urge you to stay off the roads Sunday through Monday,” Gov. Mikie Sherrill said Saturday. “The heaviest snowfall is expected Sunday night into Monday morning.”
The New Jersey Public Utilities Commission is coordinating with utility companies to organize a rapid response to power outages expected due to heavy snow and high winds, officials said early Sunday.
Sherrill said Sunday morning that utilities from other states have responded to New Jersey and are ready to help.
Officials urge residents to report outages to utility companies and to check on neighbors regularly during outages.
