MLB Scores: Nationals 3, Mets 2

In today’s game against the Nationals at Shamrock Park, the Mets fell behind early on and despite a late comeback attempt, ended up losing 3-2 to the Nationals.

  • Tobias Myers had a solid performance in his first spring training start earlier this week for the Mets. He looked strong again today, pitching three one-run innings, striking out four and walking one. His only blemish came in his final inning, when he allowed two one-out hits (a single and a double) and then allowed one of the runs to be scored on an RBI grounder. Overall, though, it was another promising outing, as Myers still looks like he’s going to be a solid addition to the Mets’ pitching staff this year.

  • After Myers left, Craig Kimbrel and Adbert Alzolay – both trying to make it to the major league bullpen – surrendered and the Nationals won 3-0. Kimbrel allowed a single in the fourth inning and gave up a double to Brady House, who later scored on a sacrifice fly, and the veteran closer also walked two runs in his inning of work. Alzolay, on the other hand, also gave up a double on House to lead off the sixth inning, then followed up with a wild pitch to move himself to third. A bases outfielder’s option power at home gave him a chance to escape unscathed, but a stolen base and a single by warm-hearted Bernabel gave Washington its third run of the afternoon.

  • Luis Garcia, Nick Burdy, Austin Warren and Joey Gerber also entered the game, all pitching scoreless innings.

  • Some noteworthy tidbits from the starters in today’s game: Brett Baty started at first base with no obvious flaws, and Michael Tauchman continued his solid spring with a double. Still, most of the bats were kept quiet by Nationals pitchers through the first six innings of the game.

  • The Amazons finally broke through for the first time in the seventh inning when Mark Vientos followed a Jared Young walk with an RBI double against Paxton Schultz. They then followed up the eighth inning with singles from former Met Dickie Lovelady, Bae Ji-hwan and Antonio Jimenez, followed by a double from Nick Morabito. However, in both cases, the bat failed to add extra runs.

  • The Mets kept the bases loaded in the ninth inning with two runs and an error by second baseman Caden Wallace, and they had a chance to win the game with two outs. But Jacob Reimer flew out on the first pitch he saw and the game was over.

The Mets are at home again tomorrow afternoon. They will take on the Astros at 1:10 pm New York time with Clay Holmes on the mound.
