Microsoft Pushing for More Films, TV Shows Based on Xbox Games, Says Phil Spencer

Microsoft said it will promote more movie and TV adaptations of Xbox games. A movie based on “Minecraft” is set to hit theaters next month, following the success of the Xbox parent company’s “Fallout” TV series on Amazon Prime Video last year. A TV series based on Microsoft’s largest game IP “Halo” will premiere on Paramount Plus in 2022. However, the show was canceled after two seasons.

More Xbox adaptations coming soon

A Variety report on the production of the Minecraft movie released on Wednesday talks about Microsoft’s “trial and error” approach to film and TV adaptations of its video game titles. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer says more movies and TV shows based on Xbox games are coming soon.

“We learned and grew in the process, and it gave us more confidence that we should be doing more,” Spencer told Variety. “We learned things from Halo. We learned things from Fallout. So, it all builds on itself. Obviously we’re going to have some people that we miss. But what I would say to the Xbox community that loves this work is, ‘You’re going to see more of it because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this work.'”

However, Spencer did not reveal details about the set of Xbox IP used for film and television adaptations.

Video game adaptations have boomed in the past few years, with TV shows based on League of Legends (Arcana) and Sony’s The Last of Us becoming household names. Bethesda’s Fallout series is getting its own TV series in 2024, with the studio teaming up with TV veterans Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy to produce the show’s first season on Prime Video. Fallout has been critically acclaimed for its authentic adaptation of a familiar video game world and has been praised by fans of the series. On the other hand, Microsoft’s Halo TV series had a mixed reception, with the show being canceled in 2024 after two seasons.

On the movie front, Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was a breakout success in 2023, raking in over $1 billion (approximately Rs. 8,605 crore) at the global box office. On the other hand, Take-Two’s 2024 film adaptation of Borderlands was a critical and commercial failure.

The Minecraft movie, produced in partnership with Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, will be released in theaters on April 4.
