Microsoft has finally unveiled its plans for its next-generation gaming vision. The Redmond-based tech giant announced Thursday that its upcoming Xbox console is codenamed “Project Helix.” It is expected to succeed the current generation of Xbox systems. Microsoft claims the upcoming hardware’s standout feature is its ability to play Xbox and PC games natively, potentially merging Microsoft’s two massive gaming ecosystems into a “hybrid” device.
Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox codenamed “Project Helix”
The news comes from newly appointed Microsoft Gaming Executive Vice President and CEO Asha Sharma, who announced the next-generation Xbox at X. Project Helix is designed to support games built for Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. This means that, in theory, next-generation consoles could allow players to run PC games alongside games developed for the Xbox platform.

The shift to a “hybrid” console PC experience directly confirms previous comments from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In late 2025, Nadella said the company was looking to “reexamine” the traditional notion that consoles and PCs are separate entities. He also emphasized that the next generation of Xbox will be a Windows-centric device, getting rid of the “walled garden” nature of traditional game consoles.
Project Helix appears to embody this strategy. According to the report, it will be able to play PC games on multiple storefronts including Steam and the Epic Games Store “from day one.” It is expected to succeed Microsoft’s current generation of consoles, including the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Recent reports suggest that the next-generation Xbox console may arrive around 2027, although the development timeline may still be changing. Internal documents show that Microsoft considers 2026 or 2027 to be the “best case scenario” and that the company has not yet “fully committed internally” to a fixed date.
The tech giant is expected to share more details about Project Helix at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC), where the company typically showcases new development tools and platform features.
Sharma confirmed that she will attend the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next week to discuss the project in more detail with partners. It will be held from March 9th to March 13th. GDC, short for Game Developers Conference, is a week-long event where video game professionals gather to discuss design, programming, and industry trends.
