Marlin Klein is often considered the fastest, most athletic tight end on Michigan football’s roster, even though Colston Loveland is the star player at the position. Now, he gets a chance to showcase his abilities at the NFL Scouting Combine.
The German-born tight end worked with scouts, general managers and coaches in Indianapolis on Friday, which included a 40-yard dash. On Friday, Klein managed to run a 4.62-second 40, the seventh-best time among tight ends (so far). As it turns out, yes, that time was faster than what Loveland ran a year ago, as the Chicago Bears rookie ran a 4.71 40 this time last year.
Klein’s 10-second time was middling, with a time of 1.63 seconds. His vertical jump of 36 inches was also middling, and his broad jump of 9 feet, 9 inches ranked third from bottom.

His 40-yard dash time was actually slower than that of another former Wolverine runner, as SMU transfer Matthew Hibner, who ran a 4.57-second 40-yard dash two years ahead of Klein in the 2020 class and transferred to the Broncos ahead of the 2024 season.
Klein had one year of eligibility left, but nonetheless left Michigan football early. NFL.com rates him at 5.97, estimating that he will be an “average backup or special teams player.” This did give him a projected superior athleticism score of 76, but his performance suffered by 58 points.
