In front of more than 60,000 spectators outdoors at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 31, the senior forward scored a hat trick for the No. 2 Michigan State men’s lacrosse team in a 5-4 overtime victory over No. 5 Penn State, including the game-winning goal on a one-on-one opportunity with Penn State goaltender Kevin Redler in overtime.

Starmell’s game-winning goal in overtime also completed the weekend and season sweep of the Nittany Lions for the Spartans, who defeated Penn State 6-3 on Friday, Jan. 30 at Pegula Ice Arena in Happy Valley.

“A big thank you to Penn State for hosting this game. It was pretty surreal to play in front of so many people, obviously happy with the win, but unreal environment, and just super cool to be part of a hockey game,” Strameier said after the game on the Big Ten Network.
Strammell, who was selected by the Minnesota Wild with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft, scored his first goal of the afternoon in the first period when he hit the back of the net with a hot shot that cleared the rebound of Porter Martone’s shot. His second goal came with two seconds left in the second period on a pass from behind the net from Daniel Russell.

With his hat trick on the afternoon, Strameier now leads MSU with 23 goals this season.
