McCann thought he had his second career hat trick when he broke through at 1:27 of the third period. However, as all the hats thrown on the ice were swept away, word came out that the double minor penalty that was whistled against Beniers was under review. The call was affirmed, the goal was disallowed, and the Capitals went on the power play.
Ovechkin scored at 2:30, 1:03 away from a 4-minute lead.
Evans scored his fifth goal of the season with 6:48 left to make it 4-1, while Beniers’ 13th goal extended the lead to 5-1 with 3:33 left. It was Beniers’ ninth goal in January, tying the team’s single-month scoring record.
