‘Massive result’ helps banish derby blues

Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison says Newcastle United showed a “brilliant” response to their Sunderland derby defeat as they beat Fulham to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

“It’s a huge result for Eddie Howe after the disappointment of the weekend,” Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“Newcastle want to win another trophy this season and become the reigning Carabao Cup holders.

“It was an important result for them and a great performance, especially in the second half.

“They were a little nervous in the first half but they played well after the break and fully deserved the win.

“After a disappointing performance you want a response so thank you to the players and staff for the response.”

Ioane Visa opened the scoring with his first goal for the club, but Fulham soon equalized through Sasa Lukic.

The game looked destined to go to penalties, but 19-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley burst onto the scene in the dying seconds to head home the winner.

“He’s a special player,” Morrison added. “He can adapt and play at right-back and midfield and he has a huge presence. You don’t realize how big he is unless you watch him live.”

“It was a great header. I think he tried to bounce the ball back into the danger area but he managed to get it into the far corner.

“I think he’s comfortable on the ball. Good players can play anywhere and he’s certainly a good player.”
