Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Tuesday slammed President Donald Trump’s comments about the murders of Rob and Michelle Renner, and she expects more Republicans to follow her lead in breaking with Trump.
“I think this statement was made completely out of the office of the President of the United States, it’s classless, and it’s wrong,” Greene told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on “The Source.”
In a post on The Truth Society on Monday, Trump railed against the beloved director’s left-leaning politics and suggested that Reiner caused his death.
“The response from MAGA’s loyal fans was overwhelming and they spoke out,” she said.
Greene, who is retiring from Congress in January after a bitter spat with Trump, said divisions within the Republican Party were widening.
“I think the dam is breaking,” she warned, pointing to the recent Republican break with Trump.
Last week, 13 House Republicans took a rare rebuke of the president, joining Democrats in voting to restore collective bargaining rights to about 1 million federal workers that he stripped earlier this year.
“The 13 Republicans who voted to repeal his executive order last week actually wore tuxedos and evening gowns to the White House Christmas party that same night. That’s pretty bold,” Greene told Collins.
That same week, Indiana Senate Republicans rejected Trump’s push to redraw the state’s congressional districts to create two more Republican-friendly seats.
“This is a sign that Republicans are heading into the 2026 campaign, a big signal that the lame duck season has begun,” Green said. “He has real issues with Republicans in the House and Senate that are going to break him up on more things to come.”
The Georgia Republican, who was one of Trump’s most ardent supporters before her recent spat with him, warned that two more issues could derail her party’s midterm election hopes: affordability (which Trump has called a “Democratic hoax”) and health insurance.
CNN previously reported that many Republicans worry that Trump has missed the point on both topics as he continues to insist that the economy is booming. “What I want to see from the president is compassion for Americans,” Green said. “Donald Trump is a billionaire and he’s the president of the United States. When he goes into the camera and says affordability is a scam and he’s trying to get absolutely nothing out of inflation, he’s talking to Americans who are suffering, and have been suffering for years, struggling to make ends meet.”
Trump announced he would deliver a live address from the White House on Wednesday night.
Green said the president should focus on voters and his campaign promises. “He needs to stop foreign leaders from entering his White House. He needs to stop embracing the al-Qaeda Islamic State terrorist who was once wanted by the United States and is now the president of Syria, and stop calling people like me traitors.”
Green worries that the future of the great old party looks grim.
“I think the midterms are going to be very difficult for Republicans,” she lamented. “I’m one of the people who’s willing to admit the facts and say I don’t think Republicans are going to win the midterms right now.”
